For a game that is almost two years old,Animal Crossing: New Horizonsstill has a pretty active player base. This can be attributed to Nintendo’s almost monthly updates immediately after its launch, whether it is to offer new content to the community or fix known issues such as theinfamousACNHitem duplication glitches. Though the social sim title already works pretty well, and only had some minor issues after its release, there are still bugs that players often find hilarious. Recently, a gamer shared how an in-game bug turned their island’s waters into a bright red instead of their normal blue color.
ThoughAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsseemed to experience a decline in its player base by the latter half of 2021, Nintendo easily resolved the issue by providing a jam-packed yet free 2.0 content update. What’s more, the announcement and release of theHappy Home Paradise paid DLCgave players more to do on their island every day. With new furniture, new villagers, and more, it is not surprising to see a player spending hours working on their own island improvements. This is likely how the player discovered the bug that made their island getaway waters turn bloody crimson.

On Reddit, user clintwoodtp84 posted a single photo that showed how the river on theirAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsislandflowed with red water instead of blue. The Redditor did not offer any explanation about what was going on in their photo caption, however they did say that the phenomenon was “worrying.” Given that there was only one photo in the post, it does not show if the bug affects only the waters that run in the rivers, or if it also affects the ocean that surrounds the island as well.
Many replies on the Reddit thread poked fun at the issue, even connecting it to theBlood Moon phenomenon fromBreath of the Wild. Others likened the red waters to a plague, and asked the player to watch out for frogs and locusts. However, given that the waters inAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis where fish are caught, it may pose an issue for clintwoodtp84 in the future, if the bug is not resolved.
Nonetheless, it can be quite surprising for anAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsplayer to boot up their game and suddenly see the red waters flowing through their island. Hopefully this is not a permanent issue, does not affect other players, and can be fixed with a simple reset of the Nintendo Switch console.
