Summary

TheGod of Warfranchise has evolved considerably since its humble beginnings on the PS2. What was once a hack-and-slash adventure through the Greek pantheon has morphed into an emotional, cinematic experience that stretches across multiple mythologies. All signs point toGod of Wartransitioning to a new pantheon, with mythological Egypt shaping up to be a strong contender. It’s going to be years until fans get even an ounce of official news on a new project, but for the time being, the future ofGod of Warseems just as ambitious as ever.

Santa Monica Studio took a huge gamble on 2018’sGod of War, not only taking Kratos out of the Greek world he ravaged for an entire trilogy, but greatly switching up the series' gameplay mechanics. Part of that change included giving Kratos a new primary weapon, the Leviathan Axe. This Norse battle axe has become an iconic feature of the last twoGoWtitles, showcasing just how much the franchise has changed.IfGoWis taking Kratos to Egypt, he’ll likely get another new weapon befitting the change of scenery. It’s too soon to say what that weapon might be, but there are a few options to be found in ancient Egyptian history.

Egyptian Khopesh in God of War

Ancient Egyptian weaponry can seem rather tame compared to the Norse and ancient Greeks, but one weapon stands out as the most emblematic of the period. The Khopesh, a curved, bladed weapon that combines the function of a sword and battle axe, remains an iconic ancient Egyptian weapon to this day. If Santa Monica Studio were to make the Khopesh Kratos' weapon of choice in mythological Egypt, it could serve as an evolution ofthe Leviathan Axe. While Kratos used the Norse weapon to great success, he could show an increased level of both finesse and brutality with the Khopesh’s unique shape.

Egyptian Mace in God of War

Kratos has wielded many weapons throughout theGod of Warseries. Fromthe Blades of Chaosto the Blade of Olympus, many of them are bladed weapons that rely on swiftly cutting enemies down. An Egypt-themedGod of War, however, could take a new direction by making a bludgeoning weapon essential to Kratos' arsenal. The mace is a primitive weapon when it comes down to it, as it’s essentially either a large stone or piece of metal on a stick. Regardless, it was a major part of ancient Egyptian weaponry, and a newGoWgame could turn it into an especially brutal tool for Kratos' adventures.

Egyptian Spear in God of War

The main function of a spear runs counter to whatGod of War’s combat is usually about, as the franchise has always been focused on getting up close and personal with dozens of enemies at a time. The spear requires more distance to be effective, but it’s inarguable just how important the spear is to Egyptian mythology specifically. The Spear of Ra is a highly powerful weapon in mythology, andan Egypt-themedGoWcould evoke a similar strength with a spear of its own. Whether it has any connection to the sun god, a spear could offer a similar change of pace as moving from the Blades of Chaos to the Leviathan Axe.

TheGod of Warfranchise has thrived thanks to its frenetic combat, and that legacy has a chance to expand even further if Santa Monica Studio moves things to the Egyptian pantheon. 2018’sGod of Warwas already a major shake-up for fans of the series, and there’s no telling just what the developer might do when it eventually pursuesa follow-up toGod of War Ragnarok. If a new weapon is part of that vision, an Egypt-themedGod of Warwill certainly have a wealth of options to choose from.
