Deep in the crystal lakes ofZaralek Cavern inDragonflight, players have discovered a creature called a Deepdrifter Megrim. This three-eyed, large-toothed fish is a rather frightful sight and may seem out of place in the otherwise beautiful and idyllic cave lake. However, this particular fish may be a clue that the Old Gods ofWorld of Warcraftmay be active inDragonflight–or at least confirmation of their lingering presence inEmbers of Neltharion.

The Old God N’Zoth is often associated with sea creatures, including fish like the Deepdrifter Megrim. In the “Warbringers” short featuring Azshara, N’Zoth first approached the Highbourne queen as a fish before revealing his massive tentacled form. Additionally, a similar Abyssal Megrim fish was found outside Azshara’s palace duringBattle for Azeroth. N’Zoth is also attributed to be the Old God responsible for corrupting Neltharion into Deathwing, so it would make sense that hispresence was felt in the fallen Aspect’s realm inEmbers of Neltharion.

ManyWorld of Warcraftfans are eager to find out if the Old Gods will play a direct role inDragonflight. Though the last of the Old Gods was defeated inBattle for Azeroth, evidence inDragonflighthas hinted N’Zoth could returnin the future. Likewise, a mysterious fifth Old God is rumored to still be at large, sparking many theories among players. New evidence of the Lovecraftian nightmares is always a big hit withWorld of Warcraftlore hounds.

So far,World of Warcrafthas not given any solid confirmation that the Old Gods themselves will play a major role inDragonflight, even if their legacy does. That said,Battle for Azerothwas originally marketed as an expansion focusing onWorld of Warcraft’sfaction warbefore pivoting into an Old Gods expansion pack. With so many hints towards their involvement, it is possibleDragonflightcould still see the Old Gods take a more direct hand in future events.
