As next-generation consoles come closer to being released, so too do thePlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X controllers. However, with no official release dates set for these devices, fans of Sony and Microsoft are currently left to deal with their aging PS4 and Xbox One controllers. A player who goes by Mixer-TastySquash on Reddit has come up with a creative solution to fix their Xbox One controller after its left analog stick fell off.
Mixer-TastySquash posted an image of their fix to the r/xboxone subreddit today, which shows the thumbstick replaced by a toothpick topped with a ball of napkins. Nearly 500 comments have been made on the post as of this writing, many of which offer other DIY options to fix theXbox Onecontroller and create a more comfortable set-up, such as using a pencil eraser, thumb tack, or a cheap, disposable set of earplugs.

There are also a fair amount of comments offering to send Mixer-TastySquash a new controller, showing a similar level of community as when oneRedditor was given a free copy ofMLB The Show 20by Sony and offered it to others because they were not a fan of the series. Then again, it could also be pity, as some have wondered what the player will do when a game requires them to press the stick in to perform an action like running. Mixer-TastySquash said pressing the thumbstick down does work, it’s just more difficult.
The Xbox controller MacGyver said they have tried to look in stores like Walmart for a replacement to no avail, and that GameStop stores nearby are still closed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. While these closures have resulted in a spike of online sales for the video game retailer,GameStop is expecting massive Q1 lossesin 2020 as a result of its shutdowns.
If there were a more open market to browse, Mixer-TastySquash would likely have plenty of options for a replacement. Since the release of the Xbox One in 2013, Microsoft has released a huge variety ofXbox One controller designs, including special-edition controllers based on games likeTitanfallandHalo 5.
At the same time, some fans have taken the initiative to create custom controllers of their own. Though this Redditor’s initiative is not quite as grandiose as a player named GardnerIsTheGOAT who created aGameCube-themed Xbox One controller for their Switch, the low-tech resourcefulness is certainly something to admire.
